Missing Darrell -- 2003-01-13 Fresh off the press, Darrell Power, bassist for the Newfoundland band Great Big Sea, is leaving the band to pursue other interests. :( For those who kept up with me this past year and a half, I spent it, living and breathing, listening and singing Great Big Sea for my thesis. I'm sad, it represents another ending - the band as we know it, the music as we know it. GBS may look for another bassist, but what I think they will do is try to get Chris Trapper, who joined them for the past tour, to join the band full-time. Which means, more percussion. Less of a folksy sound. Plus, those who really know GBS know that Power added a lot of Newfoundland roots of his own, even sharing original family songs. He will be missed. What I don't like is that the Newfoundland Herald is treating this like a tabloid story, saying that Sean McCann (another band member, singer and bodhran player) provided an ultimatum "either he goes or I do". I really don't believe that, and since they couldn't source it, to me that is just gossip. Power's wife just had a baby, and GBS has been on the road on and off (but mostly on) for ten years. I don't really blame him for wanting family time. I don't think there is any need to create gossip for a story. But who knows, maybe it *is* that seedy. If so, my opinion of McCann has definitely gone down. Anyway, I continue to listen to GBS regularly, even though my thesis is long finished. But now the push is on to publish what I do have on GBS - before they change anymore... I don't care what they say about change being good. I think it's unsettling.
